Tolerance of the state to fascist violence in Limassol

We decided to attend the event titled “Perspectives to a solution and reunification of Cyprus” with mr. Mehmet Ali Talat as the guest speaker, primarily because we had information that Elam – the “brothers” of the Greek nazi party “Golden Dawn” and the Ukrainian neo-Nazis[1] – would be attempting to cause trouble.

Upon our arrival around 18:00 at the Solonomides Cultural Centre we realized that the attendees were mostly state officials, high ranking party officials, ex ministers of state, mayors et al. What was more than obvious was the absence of youth, university students and workers in an event organized by the Technological University of Cyprus. Moreover, what we noted with much amazement is not only the absence of the police but of the organizers failure to take any protective measure towards the guests by securing the building and the surrounding streets.

Around 19:15 the fascists arrived marching. Taking advantage of the aforementioned absence both of the police or any other protective measure, they managed to invade in the hall and cause material damage, shout insults to the people present and threaten to enter the space where the said talk was taking place.

Within the hall, unaware of the events unfolding, the people were entrapped listening to the fascists kicking and trying to smash the main and side entrances to the hall. Not being able to ensure that the fascists would not manage to smash the entries and enter the main hall, Mr. Talat’s speech was interrupted. When they actually did break in, amongst slogans that included “Death to the Turks” and “Cyprus is Greek”, they launched a torch that landed amongst the people attending, taunting them and causing material damage to the hall. A t/c photojournalist attempting to photograph them was attacked as well as other people who tried to repel them. Concurrently the fascists caused a “black-out” to terrorize the audience.

At the incident’s end, some of the officers that had just arrived at the area, removed the fascists outside the hall, but allowed them presence at the main and side entrances to the hall where they were allowed to stay all through the event’s remainder! Journalists, who attempted to record their presence where injured without the police present showing any concern.  A Special Police Force unit (MMAD) only arrived at 20:30! Apparently the said unit only does its job when used to violently break up strikes, bash workers’ heads[2] and chase football fans during the weekends.

Once again we are witness to the police force and the state allowing the fascists a run-down on people. The state and police are attempting to excuse themselves from any responsibility for the events claiming unawareness as to the intentions of the fascists! The placing of the blame on the police by Minister of Justice mr. Ionas Nikolaou is an exemplification of utter hypocrisy! This same man, is the person who claimed that “there are no neo-fascist movements in Cyprus, neither are there organizations defined by ultra-nationalist or that promote either racism or xenophobia” [3]. The latter quote serves as a proof of his or the police being “unaware”.

If at a bicommunal event organized by the bourgeoisie, the bourgeoisie elite and the state cannot or do not wish to provide security and protection to the people against fascists attacks, each and every one of us has to wonder how in fact the same elite are to ensure the functioning of any solution of the Cyprus problem when they do not wish to control nor control a few dozens of neo-Nazis. How can they indeed, when the very existence of these ultra-nationalist groups has been a decades old project of this same bourgeoisie?

Let us not dupe ourselves! As fascism has never been dealt with by the bourgeoisie we should not expect them to deal with it now. Fascism will only be smashed by us, by workers, the youth, our class! And in order to achieve this, it is of absolute necessity that we organize as a class transgressing any ethnic divisions. Only through our organization and our common struggles will we win. Only the working class united can ensure the solution of the Cypriot problem with terms that can ensure real peace and the interests of the poor, the workers, the oppressed. As the bourgeois politicians do not and evidently cannot ensure the functioning – let alone the smooth functioning – of an event of their own, they will never ensure a solution that has as its core the interests of the working class.

If we are to become able to deal with attacks by the Nazis and the bourgeoisie, we should recognize the duty to enliven the procedure of organizing and struggling with t/c comrades and with all those workers and their families living in Cyprus; in order to be able to live united and in a truly liberated Cyprus, liberated from bourgeoisie and fascists of all nationalities.
