Granazi on the fascist attack at the Cyprus University of Technology

A few minutes before the common event we had organised with our comrades from the left initiative-we want a federation, a group of approximately 20 hooded fascists, attacked those who had come to attend the event with bats and rocks. We immediately gathered in front of the door of the CUT building to prevent the attack and the fascists from entering the building. The attackers did not manage to enter the building and left approximately 15 minutes later, and the event took place normally.

During the attack four of the comrades that were there were injured; fortunately enough their injuries were minor. The leader of the fascist attack (who had not covered his face) was Panayiotis Kleovoulou, a lawyer and a candidate for the European Parliament elections with ELAM in 2014, who has been presented as the leader of the nazi group EAK. Kleovoulou was recognised by dozens of people that were present during the incident and is now wanted by the authorities. It is worth mentioning that this attack was similar to the violence and the threats of Elam in 2014 in an event where the main speaker was Mehmet Ali Talat in Limassol. Also, the police kept the same position in both occasions, as they had been notified of the events, but did absolutely nothing to prevent the attacks.

Once more the police and the government allowed the fascists to bully and act undisturbed. How could it be any different when the political head of the police, Minister Ionas Nikolaou, indirectly provides asylum to the fascists with statements such as “there are no neofascist groups in Cyprus, nor are there any groups that are extremely nationalists or promote racism or xenophobia”. “He didn’t know”, just like the police “didn’t know” yesterday for yet another time.

This is where the real problem lies. The fascists see that they are not convicted for their attacks and with their proposals, such as the one on the unification referendum, being adopted by a huge part of the bourgeois political parties, they are full of themselves and believe that they are stronger than they truly are.  However, yesterday’s attack will not remain unanswered. They will find as in front of them every day.

It’s time to build a broad antifascist front with all institutions, unions, groups, organisations to isolate the fascists and destroy fascism. A front that will not allow nationalist hate rants to poison our society since the antifascist struggle goes hand in hand with the struggle against austerity, nationalism and the bankers’ governments. That is, against the politics that feed fascism. This front is essential in order to prevent the “Crystal Nights” the local Hitler followers dream of and fight for a better life for everyone.
